‘ course and some tricky and pretty par threes. Some fairways criss-cross each other so best to keep your wits about you if its busy. The clubhouse is in an elevated position with views of the demanding, uphill closing hole (your shot to the the green will require plenty of loft and placement).
To say we saved the best until last would be harsh on the other courses which we thoroughly enjoyed. Indeed, if we had played Royal Porthcawl badly we might have wished we had kept on the M4 instead of taking a little detour to play one of the finest courses in the principality. It helped that a relatively light breeze was blowing rather than the full-on gale we had faced earlier in the week.
Porthcawl hosted the Walker Cup and the Senior Open and with its impenetrable rough and pothole bunkers it is not for the fainthearted. Yes, we lost a few balls but we achieved some pars which for two mid to high handicap
players seemed fairly respectable.
The views out to the Bristol Channel
and Rest Bay are spectacular and the clubhouse - all wood panels, plaques and plush seating - has a real sense of tradition.
As Cornwall and Devon get more expensive and crowded as holiday destinations Pembrokeshire offers similarly lovely countryside and coastlines without the congestion. It’s good walking country but, as we discovered, it has some golfing gems to try as well.
