Fine Wines from East Anglia

Posted: May 31, 2016

Our terrroir and climate are particularly favourable for vines. Bacchus is widely grown as it prefers a drier climate and most recently growers have been planting Pinot Noir. Bacchus and Madeleine Angevine are becoming our signature English vine varieties producing distinctive East Anglian flavours. Other successful wine varieties include Chardonnay, Reichensteiner, Huxelrebe, Shonburger, Seyval, Faber, Rondo and latterly, Pinot blanc and Solaris; all of which help to make many of our wines critically acclaimed on a national and international level.

Our vineyards have regular Open Days and events and some vineyards exhibit regularly at agricultural and food and drink shows throughout East Anglia and London. There are specific vineyard tour programmes available to enjoy our beautiful countryside as well as our Vineyards and exciting East Anglian wines.

New Hall Vineyards

New Hall Vineyard is a family run English Wine Producer with over 100 acres of vines.  It was first established by the Greenwood family, in the small Essex village of Purleigh in 1969 and is one of the oldest and largest English Vineyards in the Country.

The grape vines grown at New Hall were carefully selected and have been planted only 12m to 24m above sea level, on well-sheltered, southern facing slopes of a shallow valley.  Which over the years this site has proven itself to be an almost ideal place for the growing of vines in England.  Producing, above average crops of high quality grapes with naturally high sugars, each year.

New Hall Vineyards is open Mon – Friday 9am to 4pm and Sat 9am to 1.30pm, free of charge, where visitors are welcome to taste some of the wines in the cellar shop under the house and walk along the Vineyard Trail.  Special Guided Tours can be booked during the summer for groups of 14 of more.

West Street Vineyard

The Mohans bought West Street Vineyard in 2009. It was the meeting of two loves: wine and Coggeshall; they had considered buying a vineyard in the Languedoc, but knew they would miss home. The 900 30 year old vines were in need of a lot of love and care and the rest of the 6 acre village plot was weeds.

It is still early days at West Street.  Their wines are winning prizes including silver medals in the UK wine competition and a bronze medal in the most influential wine competition in the world the International Wine Challenge for their 2013 White wine. Their food and service is winning plaudits and many wonderful guests who return time and time again.  Lovely food and interesting wines served in a stunning setting shared with family and friends.
