Freeze frames : Winter artwork from around Suffolk
Who says winter landscapes have to be stark and colourless? These paintings from local artists, and focusing on scenes in and around Suffolk, prove that the festive period, and into the early months of 2025, can reflect warmth and interest.

Kim Whittingham
A Bury St Edmunds watercolour artist and illustrator who delights with her quirky take on local buildings, such as The Angel Hotel in Bury St Edmunds. Her house portraits incorporate a fisheye perspective and vibrant colours. Kim’s images are also available on greeting cards, prints, mugs and tote bags.
This winter in Kersey scene (shown above) is typical of this artist’s yesteryear scenes. After studying graphic design at Colchester Art School Steven worked in advertising and at one time was one of Greene King’s freelance pub sign artists. For many years his work (often depicting yesteryear scenes) has been made into fine art prints, greetings cards, jigsaw puzzles and ceramics.
For a much admired artist who delights in using bright colour, some might argue his winter scenes are among his finest work. He says: “There is far more colour in a snow covered landscape than most people realise. It reflects the light back, so if there is a particular stunning sunset the snow will glow with the cover.”
Though he has moved to the South Coast Paul still has a gallery in Lavenham.
A West Suffolk based artist and illustrator drawn to Suffolk’s beautiful countryside. She paints in fine detail and her pictures have an almost dream-like flow and child-like appeal. It makes her winter views all the more magical.
An artist and porter at the West Suffolk Hospital, Andrew mainly paints landscapes and seascapes, in particular the coasts and islands of Greece.
Andy Lovell
Andy an artist, illustrator and printmaker, mostly uses silkscreen as his chosen medium – it reflects his graphic background and appreciation of British graphic artists.
He takes his inspiration from nature (we feature his picture ‘White Carpet’) and architecture.
Although living in Ireland Mark has family links to East Anglia allowing him to return to paint rivers and landscapes in Norfolk and Suffolk. You can see his work at the Hunter Gallery, Bury St Edmunds.
Petula Stone
Based near Bury St Edmunds, Petula has illustrated children’s books, a variety of national magazines, greetings cards and calendars and is known for her detailed botanical studies. She runs watercolour art classes in Burwell and Risby. ‘Midnight Owl’ captures the enchantment of a winter night in the countryside.
