The history of the market town of Sudbury

A rich past

Sudbury’s story stretches back over a thousand years. First mentioned in 798 AD in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle as Suthberie (“south borough”), its name distinguished it from places like Bury St Edmunds to the north. By 1086 it appears in the Domesday Book as a well-established market town.

Over the centuries, Sudbury flourished through the wool trade in medieval times, weaving and silk manufactures later, especially following the arrival of skilled Huguenot weavers. The architecture reflects this heritage: there are nearly 250 listed buildings within the town, many half-timbered, many with character, telling stories of prosperity, disease, religious change, patronage and creativity.

One of the town’s most famous sons is Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788), whose birthplace is preserved as Gainsborough’s House, now a fine gallery and museum.

Things you can do in Sudbury

When you stay in Sudbury, there is plenty to fill your days – whether you like exploring heritage, enjoying nature, or relaxing in pretty Suffolk surroundings.

The Talbot Trail: We recommend picking up a map from the Tourist Information Centre and tracking down the 14 sculptures around town. They illustrate key moments in Sudbury’s history and give you a walking tour with real atmosphere.

Sudbury Heritage Centre & Museum: Located at the Town Hall, it covers local history from pre-history to modern times.

Gainsborough’s House: A must-see if you appreciate art or history. It gives you a window into the life and times of one of England’s great painters.

The Railway Walks: For fresh air and countryside, this former railway line turned nature reserve offers easy walking among water meadows, streams and wild flora and fauna. The National Trust gives a good overview of the walk from Long Melford to Sudbury following the railway line.

The Quay Theatre and Sudbury Arts Centre: If you like theatre, music or community arts, these venues often have events, film nights or exhibitions.

Exploring the surrounding area – Sudbury is well placed to visit lovely Suffolk villages and towns like Long Melford, Lavenham and Clare. There are stately homes, historic churches, country walks and more within easy reach.

Staying here and getting around

We believe Sudbury is an excellent place to stay because it gives you that authentic Suffolk feel – historic, tranquil, beautiful – yet you’re not isolated.

  • Sudbury is well connected by road and rail, making it easy to venture further afield. You can visit other parts of Suffolk or even cross into Essex without too much travel.
  • You’ll find a variety of self-catering accommodation in Sudbury – from quaint cottages and charming inns to more modern conversions. Whatever your preference, staying in Sudbury gives you a comfortable base with character.
  • With good food, independent shops, cafes and pubs in town, plus markets (yes, the market established in 1009 still thrives) you won’t feel like you’ve sacrificed convenience for atmosphere.
