Galleries: A haven for art lovers
Suffolk has long been a magnet for artists, drawn to its stunning landscapes and unique light. You’ll find an array of galleries showcasing everything from classical pieces to modern masterpieces.
One of the county’s most renowned artistic hubs is Snape Maltings. So much goes on here, and it’s always worth checking out what the current events and exhibitions are. From sculptures displayed around the complex to the Gallery, there’s always something new to discover.
If you’re in Southwold, don’t miss the Serena Hall Gallery, where bold and colourful paintings capture the essence of coastal life. Other places to discover the works of painters, sculptors, and craftspeople include the Brett Gallery at Bridge Farm Barns, the Hunter Gallery (originally in Long Melford and now in Bury St Edmunds), The Cut in Halesworth, and the Reallyverynice Art Gallery in Bury St Edmunds.
Museums: A celebration of the landscape
Sudbury plays host to ‘Gainsborough’s House’ museum which explores the life and art of Thomas Gainsborough, one of the greatest artists of his age, renowned for his portraits and landscape paintings of the Suffolk countryside. A newly extended and refurbished gallery space is complemented by specialist exhibitions and an excellent café/restaurant.
Why not also visit Flatford Mill and explore Constable Country throughout the Dedham Vale, the location for some of he most famous rural landscapes the world over, painted by John Constable. Visit the site of the ‘Hay Wain’ and ‘Willy Lotts Cottage’ on the River Stour, under the care of the National Trust.
