When you holiday in Suffolk or north Essex, you’re stepping into a part of the country steeped in rich history, beautiful countryside, and charming villages. But if you’re looking to add a little adventure, and perhaps a touch of the dramatic, to your break, then a visit to a castle or two is just the ticket.
We’re fortunate to have some of the region’s most impressive Norman and medieval castles just a short drive from many of our self-catering properties. Whether you’re bringing the kids, enjoying a romantic break, or gathering for a family celebration, a castle day out adds something truly special to your itinerary.
So, where should you head?
Hedingham Castle – Halstead, Essex
Let’s start with a real showstopper. Hedingham Castle is one of the best-preserved Norman keeps in England. Towering above landscaped grounds, the 900-year-old structure is still owned by descendants of the de Vere family, who built it after the Norman conquest. It’s a perfect day out for all ages, with jousting displays, medieval re-enactments, and open gardens in summer. If you’re staying in or near Castle Hedingham, you can’t miss it – literally!
Framlingham Castle – Framlingham, Suffolk
Famous for its stunning wall walk which is currently closed for repairs, there is still a lot to enjoy at Framlingham Castle, such as its fascinating exhibitions. It’s the castle where Mary Tudor was proclaimed Queen of England in 1553, so you’re quite literally walking in royal footsteps. The market town of Framlingham itself is well worth a wander, with great pubs and independent shops.
Colchester Castle – Colchester, Essex
The largest Norman keep ever built in Europe, Colchester Castle is built on the foundations of a Roman temple. It’s home to an excellent museum, where you can dress up, explore ancient artefacts, and even descend into the Roman vaults. A favourite is firing the replica ballista at the castle itself! This one’s perfect for rainy days or curious minds of any age.
Orford Castle – Orford, Suffolk Coast
If you’re staying nearer the Suffolk coast, Orford Castle is a gem. Built by Henry II in the 12th century, it’s a unique polygonal keep with a fascinating spiral of rooms to explore. From the top, you’ll get breath taking views over Orford Ness and the estuary. Combine your visit with fresh seafood from the quay and a stroll along the river.
Clare Castle – Clare, Suffolk
Tucked away in the beautiful village of Clare, this castle is more of a hidden treasure. The motte-and-bailey remains sit within Clare Castle Country Park, where you’ll also find a disused railway station, walking trails and a lovely café. Have faith in your leg muscles and climb up to the top!
Eye Castle – Eye, Suffolk
Another smaller site with big character, Eye Castle sits just behind the market square in this pretty town. While only parts of the stonework remain, the raised motte offers panoramic views across the countryside, and you’ll find plenty of information boards telling the story of its Norman past. And in the summer months, there’s a theatre here.
If you’re looking for more, consider a visit to Bungay Castle, which offers a lovely riverside walk alongside its atmospheric ruins, or the ruins at Burgh Castle for stunning panoramic views.
Make it an Historical Retreat
With a David Burr holiday let as your base, you’re never far from one of these magnificent landmarks. Whether it’s a thatched cottage in a medieval village or a stylish barn conversion with countryside views, our properties offer the perfect combination of comfort and location.
So pack your walking shoes and prepare to step back in time.
