We know that character, charm, and a good story can make a house feel like home. From striking wartime relics to whimsical water towers, here’s a look at some of the most unusual building conversions in the region.
All of our properties for sale have unique features. But, if you’re looking to buy or sell property in Suffolk or Essex, you might be surprised by the extraordinary architectural gems tucked away in our counties. These are homes that began life with very different purposes.
The House in the Clouds, Thorpeness
Standing tall above the treetops of the fairytale village of Thorpeness, the House in the Clouds is one of Suffolk’s most iconic and eccentric properties. Originally built in 1923 as a water tower, it was later disguised with a mock-Tudor exterior and transformed into a five-bedroom holiday home. Its whimsical appearance and elevated position offer panoramic views over the coast and countryside, making it as much a local landmark as it is a home. If you value both uniqueness and a sense of fun in a property, this one sets the bar high – literally!
In the rolling Suffolk countryside near Framlingham, agricultural roots have given way to stunning modern living. The Silos were once grain storage units, now transformed into eye-catching, cylindrical dwellings with sweeping curves and minimalist interiors. Here, rustic meets refined. The rural location provides peace and privacy, while the design itself makes a bold architectural statement.
Built in the 1950’s this prominent water tower was redundant for decades. The current owners had the idea to transform this empty old tower into an amazing place for guests to stay. Visitors can enjoy the breathtaking 360 degree views across the Shotley Peninsular on the 80ft high Roof Garden.
We couldn’t resist including the ever-photogenic Pink House in Tiptree. It’s a vibrant testament to imaginative design and artistic flair. This six-bedroom mansion, painted in a striking shade of pink and adorned with fairy lights, is the brainchild of artist Amy Griffith and her best friend. It is an ever evolving art installation founded in 2009 and has been the host to many celebrity photoshoots and special occasions celebrations ever since.

Martello Tower Y, Bawdsey
For something truly unique – and with a coastal twist – Martello Tower Y near Bawdsey offers a glimpse into the past, repurposed for modern life. Built in the early 1800s as a Napoleonic defence tower, it’s now a distinctive, circular beachside retreat. The robust brickwork, metre-thick walls, and commanding sea views make it a standout choice for history lovers.
In the heart of the Essex countryside lies a former World War II prisoner-of-war camp turned luxury residential home. 78 Working Camp is a thought-provoking and deeply characterful conversion that tells a powerful story. While the original purpose was grim, the transformation is respectful and imaginative. The modern interiors contrast with the historical exterior, resulting in a one-of-a-kind living space that honours the past while embracing the present.
At David Burr, we appreciate that not every buyer is looking for a standard four-bedroom detached. Quirky conversions and unusual homes often attract buyers who want a lifestyle as distinctive as the property itself. If you’re selling a home with history or hunting for something truly different, we’re here to help you find the right match.
