Whether you’re seeking peaceful countryside, charming villages, or a bit of history, these lesser-known Suffolk destinations make perfect bases for your self-catering break.

Cavendish – Picture-perfect village living

Cavendish is the quintessential English village, with its pastel-painted cottages and peaceful green. It’s an idyllic base for exploring the surrounding countryside and nearby attractions like Lavenham and Sudbury. If you enjoy walking, you’ll love the gentle rambles across meadows and through ancient woodlands. It’s the perfect destination if you’re looking for a restful stay in one of Suffolk’s prettiest settings. (Pictured above)

Long Melford – Antique lovers’ paradise

If you enjoy a slower pace and a bit of treasure hunting, Long Melford is a must-visit. This elegant village boasts two grand stately homes – Kentwell Hall and Melford Hall – as well as a high street lined with antique shops, galleries, and tearooms. It’s a fantastic place for a peaceful Suffolk break, with scenic countryside walks on your doorstep. We have a range of beautiful holiday lets nearby, perfect for a weekend escape or longer stay.

Clare – Suffolk’s smallest town with a big personality

Clare is one of Suffolk’s best-kept secrets. A charming wool town brimming with history, it offers a wonderful mix of independent shops, galleries, and historic architecture. The ruins of Clare Castle, set in a tranquil country park, make for a lovely afternoon out. You’ll find lovely riverside walks and a welcoming community feel. Our local properties offer you a real home-from-home experience, ideal for those looking to relax and unwind.

Nayland – By the River Stour

Straddling the Suffolk-Essex border, Nayland is a charming village nestled in the heart of the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With timber-framed buildings, a riverside setting, and scenic walking routes, Nayland is a fantastic spot for a quiet holiday immersed in nature. It’s also conveniently close to Flatford and Constable Country, making it a great choice for art lovers and walkers alike who want to combine Suffolk and Essex in one trip.

Castle Hedingham – A step back in time

Castle Hedingham – A step back in time

Though technically just over the border in Essex, Castle Hedingham deserves a mention thanks to its medieval charm and proximity to many of our holiday cottages. The village is home to Hedingham Castle, one of the best-preserved Norman keeps in England. It’s a great place to visit with children or anyone who loves a good bit of history. Plus, the surrounding countryside is made for exploring on foot or by bike.

Hartest – Peaceful and picturesque

Tucked between Bury St Edmunds and Sudbury, Hartest is a small, tranquil village with a lovely green and a great pub, which is perfect for a meal after a day out exploring. It’s an ideal base for couples or families looking to escape the crowds and soak up the rural beauty of Suffolk.

Bury St Edmunds – Historic charm with a modern twist

While not exactly a secret, Bury St Edmunds often surprises first-time visitors with its mix of history and contemporary culture. Wander through the beautiful Abbey Gardens, explore the ruins of the medieval abbey, and admire the stunning St Edmundsbury Cathedral. The town has a thriving food and drink scene, with independent restaurants and cosy pubs. A self-catering stay here puts you at the heart of Suffolk, with excellent links to surrounding villages.
