Developed around Hedingham Castle, the village is home to a thriving community, with local amenities including a number of good pubs and tea rooms, as well as a village shop and a post office.
The castle itself is the focal point of the village and is home to arguably the best kept Norman keep in England. Well known as a wedding venue and a filming location the original building was erected in the 12 century by the de Vere family, with the keep being the only surviving medieval structure.
For those looking to commute, the towns of Braintree, Colchester, Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds and the city of Cambridge can all be reached within an hour by car. Stansted Airport is easily accessible, and there are regular bus services to the surrounding towns.
Education is provided in nearby Halstead, with a primary school and a secondary school and sixth form within 1 mile of the village.
Other highlights include the many beautiful medieval and Tudor buildings which survive in the village, beautiful countryside and the river Colne, which runs down through Colchester, to the sea near Brightlingsea, Essex.
