Things to do in Suffolk: Thetford Priory

Thetford Priory was one of the most important monasteries in East Anglia, visit the remains of this incredible 12th-century structure.

Visit the Priory of Our Lady of Thetford, one of the largest and richest religious foundations in medieval East Anglia. Foundations laid in 1107 and built on a magnificent scale in the rich architectural style typical of the Cluniac order, featuring an exceptionally well-preserved gatehouse.

The extensive surviving remains feature the lower walls of the church and cloister, together with the impressive shell of the prior’s lodging and an almost complete 14th century gatehouse.

The Grade 1 listed structure sits adjacent to the Little Ouse River, close to Thetford town center. Admission to the priory is free, and visitors can explore the priory remains freely. Plaques containing information about each building can be found across the site. Discover the history of Thetford Priory, a great attraction for people of all ages.
